ICON, the Integrated Content Development Programme initiative, is the brainchild of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
MSC Malaysia's Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) has been put in charge to help the private sector, while the Malaysia Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) will see to the public sector.
Ever since August 2009, the Prime Minister has made ICON a national priority! It has been given an allocation of RM12.86 million under the second economic stimulus plan.
ICON is part of the National Broadband Initiative to drive Malaysia into the K-economy. By design, ICON is to help enrich Malaysians by encouraging online content creation. The idea is to accelerate the supply of local online content which will drive up the broadband uptake. This will increase business opportunities and create jobs.
How is ICON supposed to help Malaysians?
ICON will help Malaysians to generate wealth for themselves. All you have to do is to get in touch with us and tell us what you need to get started via ICONedu, ICONity, ICONapps or ICONeX. Here's a brief take on them:
ICONapps is a great way to get started with creating cool applications for the mobile and online social networking platforms. The idea is to provide the critical skills for Malaysians' with programming background (especially students and the unemployed) to create applets with the hope that some participants will be able to make money from their creations. If you're coincidently also looking for a job, ICONapps will provide you job exposure via attachment programes for successful applicants.

Calling all SMIs or SMEs! If you are a SMI or SME with at least 51% Malaysian ownership and owner of educational or training digital content; you're eligible for a grant under ICONedu.
The grant goes as high as RM100,000 per project (20% upon approval and payments made out per milestone development). You can use this grant for re-purposing content, online content hosting, promotion, awareness and marketing assistance. First step is to make sure your proposed project features interactive delivery of online educational content by repurposing your existing “offline” content. This can be from CD-ROMS, VCDs, DVDs and video tapes meant for children, students, adults and senior citizens.

If you have great digital content, but you don't have the means to host it online, then get ICONeX. Targeted for Malaysian individuals and businesses (individuals, startups, SMI/SMEs included) with high traffic Websites, content, online services or game servers. This programme will help you get the high bandwidth hosting your digital content deserves. It will leverage on the low cost local bandwidth offered by the Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX) and unbundling the high costs of International bandwidth.

Are social and community content platforms your forte? Then ICONity is just right for you! If you're set on to revolutionize the Internet by leveraging on a community following or by developing or enhancing a portal by developing applications and services for it, then ICONity will suit you. Who knows? You might be on the road to making local versions of online social content and communities like Youtube, Flickr or Facebook via the Online User Generated Content (UGC) Programme. Using UGC, local businesses can be built around communities and enable Advertising Supported Business models.
