Understanding Global Business Services

For the past few decades, organizations around the world have been adopting shared services and/or outsourcing to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Traditionally, the intention was to move routine, transactional back-office work to dedicated specialists who can process it more efficiently at lower costs. Shared service is about centralizing work for internal customers in a single location, while outsourcing means engaging an external vendor to do the work.

Today, leveraging on globalization and connectivity, these delivery models have integrated and matured into Global Business Services (GBS). Businesses adopt GBS to deliver more than just transactional processes; it has now evolved to deliver high value services such as business analytics and corporate planning & development.

GBS could no longer be considered as merely labour arbitrage and just lifting and shifting to a new location. GBS is now about productivity gains, automation and working capital opportunities especially in the sectors of Information Communication Technology, Finance & Accounting, Human Resources, Legal, Engineering Services and Medicine & Healthcare.

Global Business Services IN MALAYSIA

The GBS industry has been one of the core focuses in the economic development of Malaysia towards its transformation into a high-income, knowledge-based economy by 2020. Today, the GBS sector in Malaysia provides a wider array of career paths across a variety of industries such as:

  • Energy, Chemicals and Resources (ECR)
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Logistics and Transportation (L&T)
  • Pharmaceutical and Healthcare (P&H)
  • Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG)

The AT Kearney’s Global Services Location Index has ranked Malaysia as the world’s third most attractive Global Business Service Location for the last 11 years in a row. This is certainly the right time to ride the wave to prosperity as 70,000 new jobs will be available by the year 2020 in the GBS sector in MSC Malaysia.
