ICON was established in 2009 to facilitate the development of the local content industry. The primary objective is to provide support and assistance to local content developers in creating quality web and mobile applications. In 2013, following the successes of the ICON and ICON2 programmes, ICON3 will drive the Malaysian web and mobile application development industry to global standards especially in enterprise app development. Malaysian developers will be equipped and enabled to create world-class content and generate revenue through content consumption, both in Malaysia and abroad, in line with the nation’s aim of becoming a regional and global ICT hub. New factors introduced are device manufacturer platform and telecommunication companies’ collaboration to further enhance marketability of the apps.

ICON3 programmes consist of:

ICONapps
A training oriented programme that is primarily catered for aspiring developers, where a new app has to record at least one sale on the app store.

ICONdap
Aimed at multi-skilled teams of developers in order to build world class apps, ICONdap aims to produce more quality apps in enterprise-wide SME solutions, hardware integration apps and cloud enabled apps.

 

ICONapps is a training programme, targeted at individuals who are looking to enter the mobile application development industry. This programme is open to teams of 2-4 multi-skilled Malaysian citizens such as programmers,graphic designers, animators, sound engineers and more. ICONapps offers funding assistance through reimbursement for training in multiple platform development, purchase of development platform and devices, purchase or license of 3rd party Software Development Kit, and also reimbursements for any first year developer registration fee. The focal area on app development revolves around multiple mobile platforms. Previous ICONapps participants are encouraged to participate for different platforms. For example if an ICONapps participant went for training on iOS platform previously, this time they are encouraged to undergo training for a different platform such as android.

ICONapps features several new enhancements:

  • Pitching sessions to qualify for advanced training.
  • Post training coaching sessions for the development of commercial- quality apps.
  • Milestones Based Reimbursement for all pre-determined milestones achieved from the start of the program until the apps are put online for sale.

 

 

ICONdap is a programme that provides funding to technical gurus and creative geniuses with innovative ideas for online and mobile platforms, and to help them turn those ideas into a proof of concept and prototype. This programme also services projects to cover the cost for talent, specialised hardware and software which is directly applicable to the proposed project. ICONdap is targeted at larger more ambitious projects and will be more suited to experienced developers who are looking for assistance to help them achieve greater success.

New additional submission guidelines:

  1. Web Portals will not be accepted.
  2. Only shortlisted proposals will be invited for a pitching session.

ICONdap will not require any business aspects for the application process. Submissions will be evaluated purely on technical and creative merit. Upon successful project completion, Business/VC/Angel fund matching will be provided in order to assist the team to commercialise and monetise their creations.

Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (formerly known as Multimedia Development Corporation) a unique organization established to direct and oversee MSC Malaysia, the national ICT development initiative, by advising the Malaysian Government on legislation and policies, developing industry-specific practices and setting the standards for multimedia and digital operations. MDEC is also responsible for promoting MSC Malaysia locally and globally, whilst providing strategic support to MSC Malaysia Status Companies.
